EOFC - THERAPEUTIC OILS FOR CATS

People with holistic experience when it comes to essential oils and cats attest that aromatherapy and topical application of well blended oils are great natural remedies. They can easily be done at home while also enjoying the aromas you create. Although there have been many reports of cat owners successfully treating ailments using essential oils alone (without visiting a vet) it is always a good idea to consult a veterinarian in case of something serious. In this chapter, you will learn all about the proven and tested essential oils for cats that can help you to get started with this new phase of your petting life!

THE SAFEST OILS
There ae some safe oils you can use without the need for a specific blend. This means you only need your carrier oil, the essential oil, and your cat to get started. Of course, you still need to dilute the oil before applying them on your cat. But it is a significantly easier way to get started right away without having to amass a collection of oils. Here is a short list of the known safest essential oils for cats and their uses:

GERANIUM ESSENTIAL OIL
This is one of the best known calming essential oil that's safe that's safe to use for cats. It gives off the sweet scent of roses that can also be used to blend your own perfumes. The mere fragrance of this oil can help uplift the mood of your cat and ease tension. It is even known to help alleviate physical symptoms such as cramps, edema, and sleeplessness.

When diluted, you can safely place up to two drops on your palms and pet your cat directly. You may also use this oil while applying Kitty Raindrop Technique. CLARY SAGE OIL
Clary sage oil has higher levels of antioxidants as compared to other essential oils. When used on humans, this particular essential oil improves concentration and sharpens your focus. It is particularly useful during hormone fluctuations, especially in women. It may also help reduce the effects of aging and promote healthy hair.

When it comes to cats, clary sage oil or hydrosol is known to improve and protect the coat while helping the cat adjust to new surroundings. You can mix this with eucalyptus essential oil or hydrosol to improve this effect. While this is a useful therapy for newly adopted cats, it can also help maintain the health of your cat's fur in the long run. 

LAVENDER OIL
This is by far one of the all-time favourites of essential oil users. lavender oil possesses a unique fragrance that can revitalize and boost your energy. Just like most of the other essential oils, lavender oil does a good job in promoting calmness and inducing relaxation. But more importantly, lavender oil is an ' 'adaptogen' that promotes homeostasis, which fixes a lot of health instabilities such as hormone imbalances. The best thing about lavender oil is that it is proven to be safe for all small animals, including cats and small dogs. While it can certainly be used for topical application and the Kitty raindrop Technique, better effects are usually seen when lavender oil is taken aromatically via the diffusion method.

ROSEMARY OIL

This essential oil possesses a strong fragrance that smells of wood and herbs. When used on humans, this particular oil helps promote hair growth and prevents hair loss due to aging. It also induces a state of alertness and while relieving tired muscles and mental fatigue. When used on cats and dogs, rosemary oil stimulates hair growth and maintains a healthy coat. using rosemary oil with Kitty Raindrop Technique has also shown improvements in cats who recently suffered injuries. You can safely diffuse or apply this oil topically with minimal chances of getting adverse effects on your cat.

VALERIAN ROOT OIL
The valerian root essential oil is one of the most relaxing and soothing oils for the body. In fact, there have been many clinical tests that study the relaxing properties of this particular oil. It has been shown to help ease the mind of people with restlessness, sleeplessness, anxiety, and improve the physical condition of people suffering from body pains. For cats, it can be used topically or via a diffuser, but only in small amounts. It is recommended to limit your use of diluted valerian root oil to only 2 drops per session with your cat.

ROMAN CHAMOMILE OIL
This specific essential oil has been widely used to uplift the mood of animals, including cats, dogs, and horses. This oil has been around for a very long time and was even hailed as the 'magical healer' in ancient times. Using this oil has a very low chance of causing irritation and allergies, even for cats and other small animals.
Today, it is popular for massage, cleaning and body scrubs due to its skin healing and moisturizing benefits. It also has a relaxing effect when applied on the skin or inhaled using the diffusion method. For cats, it is particularly effective for relieving stress, anxiety and injuries.

FRANKINCENSE OIL
Frankincense essential oil is probably the best and safest way to naturally improve your cat's health using aromatherapy. This essential oil is known for its healing effects and its benefits for the immune system. It is a popular ingredient in anti-aging and moisturizing skin products for humans, but it also retains these effects when applied to animals topically. remember that you can mix in a drop or two of frankincense oil with the other oils in this list to further improve their benefits. To use it for your cat, you can apply up to 2 drops of diluted frankincense oil on your palms and massage into your cat's paws.

ELEMI OIL
This essential oil is a good alternative to the frankincense oil. While they smell similar, the smell of elemi oil is noticeably lighter. It can be applied topically to moisturize, revitalize and soothe muscle pains. While its aroma also produces the same calming and soothing sensation as other oils in this list, its smell is usually less potent. You can safely apply this on your cat using a diffuser or directly on its coat.

HELICHRYSUM OIL
The first thing you will notice with the helichrysum essential oilis its sweet smell. as an antioxidant, it has many restorative properties on the skin and hair while also helping cleanse the body. It is mildly stimulating when inhaled, but it should be safe to use any time on cats. A lot of essential oil users apply this particular oil on open wounds and other mild skin abrasions. This is because it can quickly and effectively prevent bacterial infection and alleviate the associated pain. With this being said, you can safely use this as a first aid treatment for your cat.

BALSAM FIR OIL
The balsam fir essential oil is known to be an effective muscle pain reliever. You can apply this oil topically on to the area affected with aches, muscle tension, and strain due to exercise. You can diffuse or spray this essential oil in your place of work to improve productivity while keeping stress at bay. There are some commercially-blended essential oils for pets that contain balsam fir oil. In adition to its physical effects, this essental oil also improves any existing emotional or behavioral problems in your pet. You can use this topically or aromatically using a diffuser.

BLENDING YOUR OILS
If you want to keep your aromatherapy experience with your cat simple, you can choose to use only the oils mentioned in this chapter . These apecific oils have been reliable for their positive benefits, ease of use, and safety even when applied topically on cats and dogs. But remember that these oils will only provide the basic 'therapeutic' effects of essential oils, which is to calm the mind and soothe the body. But by adding the right oils and creating a blend, you can further improve the effects of these essential oils. It can even treat specific cat problems such as ear infections, fleas, odor, and so on. Not to mention that blending oils and experimenting with safe oils can also be a fun experience.

For now, you can enjoy these safe oils with your cat for as long as you like. Allow your cat to get accoustomed to aromatherapy and the topical applications of essential oils.
