Animal shelter receives $12,000 in donations for rescue dog left blinded by former owners

An animal shelter has received nearly $12,000 in donations in just one day for a blind three-year-old Labrador/shepherd mix after sharing the rescue dog’s story.

Earlier this week, the Helen Woodward Animal Shelter, Rancho Santa Fe, California, revealed that it had taken in the dog, named Louis, after he was surrendered to the pound by his previous owners, and was preparing him for adoption.

According to the animal shelter, Louis was given up by his owners after they chose to have his eyes removed rather than treat his severe eye infection. However, they then gave him up after they found they were not adequately prepared to care for a blind dog.

Louis arrived at Helen Woodward after he was rescued from the pound by a partner of the animal shelter, at which point the shelter also found he had suffered additional previous traumas, including a broken leg that was left untreated.

The shelter shared Louis’ story this week, after “weeks of recovery and adapting to foster life,” explaining that the rescue pet would soon be available for adoption.

Since then, the shelter said it has been inundated with donations and gestures of support, with countless people reaching out to offer their help caring for Louis.

“Animal lovers across the globe have been calling, emailing, donating, filling out adoption applications and offering services," Helen Woodward said in a statement to People, adding that it has received thousands of dollars in donations in just 24 hours.

The shelter continued: “Offers to sponsor his adoption, to sponsor his food, to sponsor muffin halos/bumper-collars/sonar-collars, to pay for his medical care, and more, are coming from across the country,” as well as from “countries as far away as Spain, Panama, The Netherlands, Chile, and Canada”.

Shivering terrier Ruby is rescued by a paddle boarder

This is the heartwarming moment a shivering terrier is rescued by a paddle boarder after falling into the River Thames.

Footage captured near the river in Richmond, south west London, shows the dog, named Ruby, helplessly stare at her owner after falling into the water and getting stuck on a piece of wood.

Just moments later, paddle border Kevin De Klerk makes his way over to the canine, who had fallen in while her owner stopped to feed a goose, and lifts the animal from the water.   

During the clip, which was filmed by Vivi Hanson on January 9, the dog shivers in the cold water as her owner says: 'You coming?'

Within seconds, the paddle boarder makes his way to the canine as Ruby's owner shouts: 'Thank you!'

Ms Hanson, who later uploaded the footage on Instagram, told Storyful: 'Myself and Ruby's owner ran to the side closest to the river to call her to swim toward us, but unfortunately she got stuck on a piece of wood.' 

She went on to explain that the dog's owner was about to jump into the river when they saw the paddle boarder make his way over to help Ruby.

Ms Hanson added: 'Ruby was only in the water for around two minutes. It all happened very fast.

'So lucky and such good timing that Kevin just happened to be there on his paddle board!'

On Instagram Ms Hanson wrote: 'On Saturday poor little Ruby accidentally fell into the river! Myself and her owner rushed to the side to help her but she got stuck! 

'Her owner was about to jump in but by pure luck and good timing @kevindk13 got on his paddle board and came to Ruby's rescue! She'd only been in the water max two minutes, it was all so fast!'

Ms Hanson said she has been in contact with Ruby's owner and the dog is now fully recovered from the ordeal.

Incredibly rare albino squirrel found in London

This is the heartwarming moment that a househoulder in London fed an incredibly rare albino squirrel. 

Squirrels have about a one in 100,000 chance of being born albinism. As well as the white hair and white skin, albino squirrels have red eyes. They also suffer from vision problems.

Ordinarily, squirrels remain with their mothers until they reach about four months old before making their own way into the wild.

The remarkable footage was filmed in Sutton, south London on December 8.  

The squirrel, despite being wild, was comfortable enough to take seeds from the man's hand.  

The albino squirrels suffer from a lack of melanin, which leaves them with white fur and red eyes. 

As a result of their albinism, the squirrels have worse eyesight and are easier to track by predators. 

In November, Richard Waugh, 51, was thrilled when he spotted the incredibly rare squirrel scampering around outside his flat in Edinburgh.

In June, Muntaqa Dar, 27, came across the completely white animal on a walk with his wife Amreen, 24, and one-year-old son Abdullah in Carshalton, London. 

In April, an albino squirrel known as Snow White was seen in Faversham, Kent. The white squirrel has been visiting one home since March 2019.
